Musculoskeletal conditions involve diseases that affect bones, joints and associated tissues such as tendons, ligaments etc. They mainly affect the locomotory system of the body.
Musculo skeletal problems comprise conditions like osteoporosis, osteopenia and associated fragility fractures, traumatic fractures;osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout; and also, diseasesaffecting the spine like Cervical spondylosis, Lumbar spondylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, Sciatica etc. Common symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders include pain, weakness, stiffness, joint crepitations and decreased range of motion. It may also be associated with inflammation which may cause pain, swelling, warmth, tenderness, impaired function, and sometimes redness of the overlying skin. Primary Management of these conditions as per modern medicine includes analgesics which will block the sensation of pain but long-term use of these medicines are known to have significant side effects.
Hence, in these conditions Ayurveda chikitsa and marma chikitsa play an important role in pain management and restoring the range of motion. In Ayurveda, these Musculo skeletal diseases are grouped under diseases primarily caused due to vata. So, all the treatments which mitigate vata such as Snehana (application of oil), swedana (fomentation), seka (rhythmic and controlled pouring of warm liquid over the body), Upanaha (warm poultice), Basti etc., are considered best practices for treating these Musculo skeletal diseases.
Marma chikitsa is also a specialized branch of Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine, which is of significance in managing pain caused by Musculo skeletal diseases. Marma Chikitsa can provide instant relief from Neck pain, Cervical & Lumbar spondylosis, Sciatica, Multiple Joint pains etc., by various manipulation techniques and also by giving controlled pressure over various vital points of the body, without the need for internal medications.
