COUGH

Cough is a sudden and variable expiratory thrust of air from the lungs. There are 4 phases of cough irritation, inspiration, compression, expulsion and there 3 types of cough acute (onset less than 3 wks) subacute(3 to 8 wks) chronic (more than 3 wks). causes for cough includes common cold, bacterial infection, irritation of throat,fever,nasal obstruction, foreign particles.

Ayurvedic view: Ayurveda explains cough under the heading of kasa. The main dosha invoved in the disease is vata dosha and kapha dosha.

Treatment:

Snehapana: oleation helps in reducing vatadosha which is the prime cause of kasa.

Swedana: fomentation helps in liquification of kaphadosha and reducing vatadosha.

Vamana and Virechana: the liquified kaphadosha is eliminated by vamana and virechana karma.

Dhumapana: The dhumapana helps in reducing accumulated kaphadosha and thus reducing kasa.

RHINITIS

Inflammation of the nasal mucosa, it is caused by poor resistance, exposure to cold, poor nutrition, tonsillitis, chronic nasal sepsis, hereditary, infections (bacterial, viral, sensitivity to pollens, pollution. Symptoms include nasal congestion, itching, sneezing, headache, watery discharge from the nose
Risk factors for rhinitis are smoking, cocaine abuse, more intake of pain killers, oral contraceptives, alcohol consumption, exposure to cold or dry air.
There are 3 types of rhinitis allergic, non-allergic, infectious.
Complication due to rhinitis are sinusitis, pneumonia, fever, acute otitis.

Ayurvedic view: Ayurveda explains about rhinitis under heading of pratishyaya.
The causative factor of pratishyaya is kaphadosha.
It causes watery nasal discharge and sneezing.

Treatment:

Swedana: Fomentation helps in liquification of kaphadosha and clearing the upper respiratory tract.

Dhumanasya: It helps in liquification of kaphadosha and eliminating the cause of pratishayaya.

Vamana: The liquified kaphadosha can be eliminated by vamanakarma.

SINUSITIS

It is an inflammation of the lining mucosa membrane of a sinus. Sinusitis usually caused by a virus, in some cases bacteria or rarely fungus, nasal polyps, DNS, allergies, RTI, commonly sinusitis are 4 types maxillary sinusitis, ethmoid sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, sphenoid sinusitis. Symptoms of sinusitis are inflammation, thick discharge from the nose, nasal obstruction, pain over forehead, decreased smell and taste, ear pain, cough or sore throat, bad breath, fatigue.
Whenever the allergies enter it causes mucosal congestion, then there will be increased secretions in the sinuses, once secretions start thickening, cilia and epithelium are damaged retained secretions causes inflammation bacterial infection, sinusitis.

Ayurvedic view: Peenasa (Sinusitis) is aggravated stage of pratishaya which causes headache, heaviness of head, dryness of palate, watering of eye, sticky nasal discharge, burning sensation and nasal obstruction.

The main cause of it is kaphadosha and vatadosha.

Treatment

Dhumanasya: It helps in liquification of kaphadosha and eliminating the cause of pratishayaya.

Vamana: The liquified kaphadosha can be eliminated by vamana karma.

Nasya karma: It helps in reducing vatadosha.

Marma chikitsa: Manipulation technique over the forehead, occipital region - helps to reduce most of the respiratory disorders.
