What is Obesity?

Obesity is a condition characterised by an excess of bodyfat. In other words, obesity is when body weight is more than 20% above the normal.In the present fast-moving world, time is money. In a race of constantly trying to catch up, people tend to forget their responsibility of keeping themselves healthy. With the excuse of lack of time to follow proper food habits, they rely on canned food or fast food for their daily meals. In addition,stress and tension from work, lack of physical activities, lack of sleep, a sedentary lifestyle etc.,are factors that add to making a person over weight and subsequently obese.

Am I obese?

Obesity is measured using Body mass index. BMI is weight in kilogram divided by height in metres squared [weight in kg/(Height in meters)2].
One can use the BMI chart given below, to find know their obesity gradings.

Is obesity dangerous?

Obesity canlead to many diseases viz., Type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure, certain cancers (breast, colon, and endometrial), stroke, gallbladder disease, fatty liver disease, high cholesterol. So, the maxim,“Prevention is betterthan cure”, holds good for obesity.

What is the treatment of Obesity as per modern science?

Most patients seeking assistance to manage obesity, aresufficiently motivated to lose weight, but their earlier attempts have failed to provide long-term cure. Modern science offers various treatment modalities like weight reducing pills, liposuction and others like bariatric surgeries, which, although give quick results, come with long term irreversible side effects which will make the patient’s condition even worse.

How does Ayurveda help in weight reduction?

Weight reduction in Ayurveda is a process that starts primarily by removing all the causative factors and then modifying life style with respect to food, activities and sleep. Various treatments like Udvartana (Powder massage), Ruksha swedana (Steam using dry drugs) etc., along with internal herbal medications in the form of Choorna, Kashaya etc.,and specific Pathya (Diet) customized, based on individual prakriti (body type) and condition, will help in successful weight reduction as per Ayurveda.

Marma chikitsa, which is a part of Ayurveda, acts by stimulating the vital points which corrects the body metabolism and aids in weight reduction. Similarly, Yoga also has a major role in weight reduction.

How long does it take to reduce my weight?

It depends on various factors like: Age of the patient, health conditions of the patient, associated diseases like diabetes, Hypothyroidism, PCOS etc., and also depends on how well the patient is adhering to the treatment and diet prescribed to him.Heredity also plays an important part in obesity.

Weight loss is a customized treatment. The effectiveness and result also differ from individual to individual. Therefore, the duration of the treatment can vary from 2 weeks up to 4 - 6 weeks.
